The Client
Steve West and Dave Sandel of Hammerhead Engineering came to our engineer, Ruby, for his expertise in mechanical engineering and contract manufacturing.
The Challenge
Their cooling fan invention, “Love Jugs”, was at the time a functional prototype and the task of this project was to prepare for manufacturing.
The Outcome
Overall this project was a huge success. One of the challenges to the manufacturing of the product was a concern over the engine vibrations leading to wear and tear on the fans and other parts. This can happen over time and it is why we couldn’t rely on off-the-shelf parts. Working with the contract manufacturers, Ruby designed custom parts that can handle the vibrations and would be easy to mass produce.
Ultimately, the product did end up going to market and it is widely adopted in the Harley Davidson and Indian motorcycle communities. Thousands of products have shipped out and continue to sell today.
Product Variants
Following the success of the original Love Jugs cooling system for Harley-Davidson motorcycles, the product line expanded to meet broader market demand. This included the development of the Mighty-Mite, a compact version designed for tighter installations without sacrificing cooling performance.
Love Jugs variants are now available for both Harley and Indian motorcycles, giving riders more choices in size, fit, and airflow while maintaining the same focus on engine protection and reliability.
Custom Components
Strong supplier relationships in China allowed us to source and create custom parts that weren’t available off the shelf. These components played a key role in improving the design—reducing size, increasing strength, and supporting better fit and finish. By working closely with trusted partners overseas, we gained access to flexible tooling options and faster production timelines that helped move the project forward without compromise.
Patented Product
The Love Jugs cooling system earned a U.S. utility patent, marking a key milestone in the product’s development. The patent recognized the originality of the design and its approach to cooling V-twin engines at idle. Securing this protection not only validated the innovation behind the product but also strengthened its position in the market—giving the brand a clear advantage as competitors entered the space.
